Acupuncture Services

A proven centuries old system that restores vitality to mind, body, and spirit

-All Acupuncture, facial renewal, and sound healing services are covered under your extended health benefits-

Acupuncture is the insertion of “thread-like” needles along energy pathways in the body. Treatments are relaxing, effective, and painless thanks to modern technology. This modality of Traditional Chinese Medicine dates back over 3000 years, and is the fastest growing alternative modality in North America. The traditional explanation for acupuncture’s effectiveness is that it modifies the flow of energy (known as qi) throughout the body. Research demonstrated that the effects of Acupuncture needling include influencing the activity of adenosine, an amino acid which becomes active in the skin after an injury to ease pain. This may explain in part why pain relief is often experienced as one of the benefits of Acupuncture. In fact, much research in the West has focused on this pain-relieving effect, rather than Acupuncture’s traditional role of balancing energy to address a wide range of disorders, and the more subtle mechanisms that may be responsible for its overall benefits to health.

There are many myths and misconceptions about Acupuncture, especially surrounding what it actually is and how it can help you.

Contrary to popular Western belief, Acupuncture is not just a system for inserting very fine needles into specific body locations to alleviate pain. So, what is Acupuncture, then? Acupuncture is a complete medical protocol focused on correcting imbalances of energy in the body. From its inception in China more than 2,500 years ago, acupuncture has been used traditionally to prevent, diagnose and treat disease, as well as to improve general health.

Acupuncture is a simple, safe and effective health care technique that helps promote the body’s ability to heal itself.

Acupuncture was popularized in the States during the early 70’s after President Nixon opened relations with China. At the time, a New York Times reporter, James Reston, had an appendectomy in a Chinese hospital using acupuncture as a means to decrease his post-surgical pain. However it has been used in Europe since the 1800s, brought to France from Vietnam.

Because the goal of acupuncture is to promote and restore the balance of energy, which flows throughout the body, the benefits of acupuncture can extend to a wide variety of conditions, from emotional disorders (anxiety, depression) to digestive complaints (nausea, vomiting, irritable bowel syndrome). It can be beneficial for pain syndromes due to an injury or associated with chronic degenerative diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. It can also be helpful in treating neurological problems like migraines or Parkinson’s disease, or as a rehabilitation strategy for individuals who suffered a stroke. Respiratory conditions, including sinusitis and asthma have been relieved with acupuncture, as have many gynecologic disorders and infertility. Acupuncture has also proved beneficial for reducing fatigue and addictions, and for promoting overall well-being.

At pHresh Spa, we can treat any symptom with pain-less Acupuncture (and/or other modalities) Using high quality needles, symptoms from A-Z can be treated, even for the most sensitive patient.

Also included under Acupuncture services are:

a)IMS (Intramuscular Stimulation)

IMS is an effective treatment for acute and chronic pain of neuropathic origin. It is based on scientific neurophysiological principles. IMS involves the insertion of fine acupuncture type needles into the body where muscles have shortened or contracted. It is problems at these points that are often at the root of long term pain. While a muscle is tight and contracted it can’t heal properly

-with IMS you are stimulating a healing process and helping the muscles to relax.

IMS treatment is best suited to treat soft tissue pain that shows no obvious sign of ong

Conditions that can be treated using IMS
oing tissue damage or inflammation, such as many forms of: neck/back pain, tennis elbow, frozen shoulder and fibromyalgia, amongst others.

A broad range of musculoskeletal problems are now successfully treated using the relatively new technique of Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS). We can treat a variety of ailments using IMS including:

  • Achilles Tendonitis
  • Acute Sports Injuries
  • Arthritic Conditions
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Chronic Tendonitis or Bursitis

b)TMJ/Joint Pain

Portrait of a young woman touching her face, close-up

TMJ stands for Temperomandibular Joint Disorder. If you experience clenching, grinding, popping, clicking of the jaw, pain when you chew, frequent headaches or neck pain, you may have TMJ.

Acupuncture can target the root cause of the condition by balancing the mind and body, and helping to reset the neuromuscular tension in the jaw. Acupuncture not only relaxes the targeted muscles in the jaw, it decreases the overall stress level in the body.

A recent British study of 70 cases of dental patients receiving acupuncture for TMJ indicated that 85% of patients benefited with an average reduction in pain intensity of 75%. A 2008 study reported high long-term patient satisfaction and improvement of symptoms 18 to 20 years following acupuncture

At pHresh Spa, we have had a 95% success rate in treating TMJ patients. Within 3-5 sessions, the majority of patients experience significant relief. Dentists throughout the lower mainland send their patients with these complains to AcuCare, knowing that they will be well looked after and that they will get the relief they seek.

“I’ve had severe TMJ pain for the past 8 years. I visited chiropractors, RMTs, and orthodontists, but nothing seemed to work. After only two visits to Julie, I felt immediate relief! My painful headaches, neck aches, and jaw stiffness were gone. I finally have my life back!”

2)Facial Renewal Acupuncture

The secret to looking and feeling your best

Facial renewal acupuncture is also is known as Cosmetic Acupuncture or facial rejuvenation acupuncture. Some practitioners of Cosmetic Acupuncture only focus on treating the face at the skin level. At AcuCare, our approach to facial renewal is very holistic. Our treatments not only deal with wrinkles and sagging tendencies, but also the underlying root imbalances in your system that are likely contributing to other health issues as well as your beauty concerns.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine Theory beauty comes from within. When you start to age, it is possible the flow of Qi, Blood, and Essence are not balance within your body. When balance is restored, you will feel and look more radiant. On a physiological level, acupuncture has been shown to increase circulation of blood and life energy throughout the body. Increased blood flow can help us to maintain healthy skin and muscle tone by sending nourishment, moisture, and “lifting” energy to the skin and muscles of the face.

  • improves muscle tone and dermal contraction
  • helps to eliminate fine lines of the face and has a diminishing effect on larger wrinkles
  • helps to reduce bags and sagging tendencies
  • helps to eliminate edema and puffiness – by improving metabolism
  • decreases the tendency towards sagging jowls, tightens the neck, reduces double  chins, and lifts drooping eyelids
  • improves acne (caused by hormonal imbalances) and tightens the pores
  • increases local blood and lymph circulation and improves facial color
  • reduces stress, helps menopause and PMS, and improves overall health and wellbeing
  • slows hair loss and hair graying
  • helps depression, anxiety and aids self-esteem
  • reduces symptoms of a toothache, TMJ, Trigeminal Neuralgia, and Bell’s Palsy
  • helps sinus congestion and headaches and benefits the eyes, ears, thyroid, and brain

The face is the mirror to our entire physical, mental, and spiritual self.

Included in your treatment

  • overall health assessment (initial)
  • addressing your concerns and expectations
  • body and facial acupuncture specified for your needs
  • non-needle modalities including magnets to reinforce the effectiveness of the session
  • grounding and facial massage with vibrational tuning forks (see below)
  • jade rolling (to bring yin upwards to the face)

Contra- Indications

  • laser treatments/resurfacing must wait 21 days before treatment
  • pregnancy
  • problems with bleeding (hemophiliacs, Warfarin treatment)
  • serious health conditions such as Cancer, AIDS, seizures, acute hepatitis, and coronary disease

Research Study “A 1996 report in the international Journal of Clinical Acupuncture reported that among 300 cases treated with Cosmetic Acupuncture, 98% had marked effects with one course of treatment.
The effects included:

  • Skin becoming more delicate and fair
  • Improvement of the elasticity of facial muscles
  • Diminished wrinkles
  • Healthier/brighter complexion
  • Overall rejuvenation not confined to the face

Facial renewal Acupuncture creates a ‘positive’ injury, resulting in plumping of tissues and fat cells due to greater levels of collagen and elastin. (tissue injury and histamine release increases fibroblast collagen synthesis). Qi and blood flow increases nutrients and oxygen to the cells and balances facial color.

There are many different techniques we use in facial renewal Acupuncture. After your initial assessment, we will cater these protocols to your needs. One technique that is commonly used at any age is threading. We use this for fine lines and wrinkles. Working with the lines in this way, allows collagen to help fill in the creases, smoothing and often erasing these fine lines and wrinkles.

We also target sagging on the face and neck. As the muscles that keep the face tight tend to atrophy as we age, we use motor points to lift sagging and release tension in opposing muscles (one doesn’t exist without the other), giving you a firmer, lifted, and tight look.

Other common techniques used are working with the muscles origin and insertion to increase circulation throughout the many muscles on the face and neck. Through extensive training at AcuCare, having options to which we work from means more tools in our toolkit, and help with prevention in the breakdown of the skin cells.

A few of the skin concerns facial renewal can help with are:

-Dry and dull skin:

Many of us go to the makeup counters in department stores hoping the skin care companies promises of miracle creams will do the trick! What tends to happen is these creams aren’t being absorbed by the skin due to lack of circulation. Facial renewal Acupuncture will quickly hydrate the skin cells, allowing the face to become hydrated and revitalized. Through the increase of blood flow, it reduces dry, flaky skin, stimulating all the flesh and soft tissue around it. Finally, those skin creams nutrients and moisturizing properties will have a better chance of working with the epidermis.

–Hyperpigmentation/uneven skin tone:

As you age, you may notice dark patches of skin around the cheeks, nose, and sides of the face. Sometimes, this is also seen in younger skin due to an underlying predisposition. A common cause of hyperpigmentation is an excess production of melanin (this gives skin its color). As facial renewal acupuncture boosts the skin cell production, which balances the melanin production. Acupuncture will also break up stagnation, which can help reduce discoloration and balance the overall skin tone.

this can be due to a hereditary disposition, where you flush regularly due to enlarged blood vessels of cheeks and nose, swelling and inflammation. In Chinese Medicine, this is due to heat accumulation within the channels. Acupuncture is beneficial to treat rosacea as it clears the blockage of stagnation on the face, as well as the internal imbalance of heat.

This is commonly seen in teenagers, but also in more mature skin. All different types of acne can be treated, including small bumps, cystic, and whiteheads. In Chinese Medicine, skin eruptions and redness of face are due to underlying toxic heat. It is important to work with the circulation to release stagnation, as well as the underlying root imbalances of the entire body.

-Scars/acne scarring:

facial scars can be due to the results of an injury, or from longstanding acne. We can see hypertrophic or atrophic scars, as well as acne scarring with bumps, pitting, and uneven skin texture. Thankfully, through Japanese scar therapy techniques, we can encourage the skin cells to regenerate, having an end result of smooth skin.

In your 20s:

Generally your skin is very healthy and you might not be too concerned about wrinkles, but you still might have skin issues like acne and rosacea, or start to see those first fine lines. If you’re a sun worshipper or healthy active outdoor type, chances are the sun has been doing damage to your skin without you being aware of it. Here is where facial rejuvenation Acupuncture really shines in that any beauty issues that you have now are likely coming from underlying root imbalances. If these are addressed early, not only will it set you up to prevent the signs of aging, but it will also restore your body to optimal health. Speaking from experience, I started having cosmetic Acupuncture at the age of 21, and am thankful that I did, as I feel it prevented my forehead wrinkles from becoming deep in my 30s!

Most people aren’t considering Botox or facial renewal Acupuncture in their 20s. Your skin is still fresh and youthful looking. Patients who benefit from cosmetic acupuncture in their 20s tend to be dealing with issues of skin clarity, dryness, rosacea, and of course are no stranger to acne that impact their self-esteem and confidence as they pursue their career, relationship, and life goals

In your 30s and 40s:

Your skin is likely starting to show the first signs of aging. You may start to notice fine and deeper lines around the eyes, lips, and forehead. Build up of stress from work, lack of time for self-ca

re, and dehyration or poor nutrition has likely created underlying health issues that are now starting to show in sagging, dark circles, lackluster dry skin, and facial tension. Facial renewal Acupuncture in your 30s and 40s works wonders to naturally stimulate the production of collagen and elastin. Typically, these are the childbearing years, where pregnancy can not only deplete the blood and iron levels, but

also cause permanent symptoms like melasma, weak hair and nails, and stretch marks. In your 30s and 40s life becomes even busier as you pursue your career and life goals, and possibly start to raise a family. There are so many demands on your time and energy and your self-care suffers. This causes

Seeing others spending money on botox and fillers, you may have started thinking about whether you should consider this as an option. You may be tempted to start just a little bit, so the challenge with botox and fillers is that not only are there risks, but it is very easy for a little bit over time to leave you unrecognizable to your children and friends, let alone yourself. Facial Renewal Acupuncture keeps you looking like yourself, and helps you not only look great, but feel great too in your own skin. Botox and fillers only temporarily address the surface, and has potential to create health complications on top of the underlying health imbalances that are already contributing to the signs of aging on your face. underlying imbalances that can really start to show on your face like deepening crows feet, lines on the lips and forehead, dark circles, loose skin tonality. During this busy, stressful time, Cosmetic Acupuncture can address your topical beauty concerns that are showing on your face by stimulating production of collagen and elastin, while oxygenating the skin. More importantly, it helps to bring your body back into balance internally, and support a strong immune system and boost your energy.

In your 50s and 60s:

Even though you still feel 20 inside, by the time you reach your 50s and 60s, peri-menopause and menopause have started their natural processes of thinning skin, breaking down collagen and elastin. You may see turkey waddles, sagging jowls, and deep wrinkles and lines around the smile, eyes, forehead and lips. Crepiness around the neck, bags below eyes, and loss of fullness around cheekbones may leave you wondering where to turn to look as young as you feel inside.

In addition, you might be experiencing symptoms such as thinning hair, dryness or lack of sex drive, and other aging symptoms that can be addressed along with more visable benefits of facial renewal acupuncture.

b) FACIAL SOUNDSCAPES – 65 minutes

Unlike some other sound healing methods, this unique modality is based upon the principles of Chinese medicine. It provides an alternative for treating areas of the face such as the neck, chin and jowls which patients may be sensitive to needling. These vibrating forks are applied gently to the face, and are relaxing and pleasantly tingly. A tuning fork treatment is non-invasive. You simply relax and allow the vibrational sound to play through your body as every cell pulsates, resonates, and interacts with the powerful vibrations, thus awakening the life energy of the cells. Each treatment is tailor-made for each person’s constitutional archetype. An entire topical herbal protocol accompanies the treatment.
Sound travels through water four times faster than any other medium down to the cellular level. This creates a perfect environment for the body to respond while stimulating collagen and elastin. Elastin is a protein in the connective tissue that is elastic and allows many tissues in the body to resume their shape after stretching or contracting.

Each tuning fork is tuned to a natural harmonic series based on the orbital properties of the planet or heavenly body. These forks resonate in harmony with the celestial bodies and each communicates a distinct aspect of the Music of the Spheres. They are used to correct imbalances, uncover emotions, stimulate growth, development, and transformation and facilitate inner harmony and wholeness. The Acutonics system of sound healing is a distillation of the theories of Pythagoras, Johannes Kepler, and Swiss scientist Hans Cousto, given this particular form and further refined by Donna Carey, Ph. D., L. Ac. of the Acutonics Institute of Integral Medicine, LLC.

Benefits of Facial Soundscapes:

  • Reduce sagging and jowls
  • Strengthesn muscles and smoothes turkey waddles
  • Disperse congestion and puffy eyes
  • Stimulates collagen and elastin production
  • Soften wrinkles
  • Reduce scarring
  • As the tuning forks gently glide along the face, neck, and décolletage, you will enjoy the beautiful harmonic tones of the intervals they create.

Integrating Chinese topical herbs along with your sound healing regimen offers the following benefits:

  • Additional moisture and nourishment is brought directly to the skin.
  • Lung qi and yin is strengthened, treating the root cause of dry skin.
  • Using herbs in conjunction with acupuncture points amplifies the benefits of this renewal process.
  • Depending on needs, specific herbal formulas will be used to treat conditions such as rosacea and acne.
  • Aromatherapy and essential oils reinforce the penetration of the herbs into the skin.

Just like Constitutional facial renewal acupuncture, the results are cumulative – you need a series of treatments to get results. This treatment can be used alongside facial renewal acupuncture and our full Chinese facial. Ten to twenty treatments are recommended to see results, followed by maintenance treatments monthly or bi-monthly.
This amazing constitutional non-needle facial was created by world renowned acupuncture facial specialist, Mary Elizabeth Wakefield. Julie Shillabeer has spent a decade working with Mary Elizabeth Wakefield as her assistant in teaching all 5 levels of this course to other practitioners throughout North America.

c) SOUND HEALING – 50 minutes

We use vibrations from precision-calibrated tuning forks that access and travel through the body’s meridian and chakra systems. It uses the same philosophies as acupuncture, but is non-invasive because there are no needles involved. Each fork is tuned to the orbital frequency of a specific celestial body. The vibrating forks are placed on acupuncture points and/or directly on the pain source to treat a wide variety of physical, emotional/psychological, and psycho-spiritual issues.

Like adjusting a piano, your body can be tuned to achieve optimal physical balance. Tapping two tuning forks will instantaneously alter your body’s biochemistry and bring your nervous system, muscle tone and organs into harmonic balance. In seconds … your body enters a deep state of relaxation. Feeling centered, your mind will be at peace.
